Dual Citizen - I Was The One

Hey what's up! Here's my latest track. I haven't been blogging as much here lately because I started a separate music blog called Disco Filter. Between that and my other blog about weird food products called Breakfast Corn Dog, this blog is basically returning to its original purpose of serving as my personal repository for all the random things I feel like posting online. So expect more driving videos and stuff, especially since I recently picked up a GoPro Hero 2. Happy Friday!

It seems all my favorite new disco comes out of France these days. No big surprise really, given that in many ways it is the country where disco house originated. Here's a remix by Jupiter, a name I can't help but think was inspired by the legendary synthesizer. I know they at least have a Jupiter 6, so it must be true.

The song has tons of plucky analog synths, morphed vocals, big wide spectrum snare, and a relatively laid back tempo. It's everything I like about the genre. You can download the mp3 for free on their Facebook page (only 192 kbps, oh well). Stony Roads says Jupiter is putting out an album soon, so that's worth keeping an eye out for.

Will Nile Rodgers help Daft Punk bounce back?

Daft Punk's "Discovery" is one of those albums I would bring with me if I were trapped on a desert island. The songs created an imaginary futuristic land that I think about all the time. The record was so undeniably influential, and it got a whole lot of people interested in electronic dance music.

Lately, however, Daft Punk's music has not lived up to it's reputation, especially the lackluster Tron: Legacy soundtrack. The hooks weren't there. The structure was weak. I was very disappointed by that album, to say the least. Yeah, yeah it's a movie soundtrack. Whatever, it fell flat.

Now there's fresh hope! Legendary producer Nile Rodgers of the disco band Chic is supposedly working with Daft Punk, at least according to this interview in Houston Culturemap.

"Those guys are great,” Rodgers said. “They're coming to my apartment on Monday and we’re going to talk about making a new record together."

Holy shit! I really hope so! Rodgers has exactly what Daft Punk has been lacking these days: the ability to create a catchy song people want to listen to again and again. The ability to get people out onto the dancefloor.

Rodgers has produced a shit load of albums, including Madonna's "Like a Virgin", David Bowie's "Let's Dance" and records by Duran Duran, Grace Jones and Diana Ross. Hopefully he his magic can propel Daft Punk back to the heights they haven't seen since Alive 2007.

Treasure Fingers - Rooftop Revival

Really love this Treasure Fingers song, but annoyed that the mp3 hasn't been released yet! Maybe I can ask him about it when we go see him with Theophilus London next Friday at Austin's newest venue, the Beauty Ballroom.

Louis La Roche - F.U.B.A.R.

Ever since I was first exposed to the instantly classic Canadian film FUBAR back in 2002, I can't help but think about Terry and Deaner every time I hear the acronym for "Fucked up beyond all recognition."

In fact, it's been altogether to long since I've rewatched the mockumentary about that pair of booze fueled ragamuffins. It would probably take a few flats for those heshers to appreciate the joys of new disco, but perhaps producer wizard Louis La Roche could find his way to their hearts.

I have been enjoying LLR's sampled filtered house music for a while, and now he's handing out his newest track for free.  Giver!

Midas Touch the Sky - Midnight Star vs. Kanye West (Dual Citizen mashup)

Last time we were in NYC, I picked up the 12" single for one of my favorite disco funk songs, Midas Touch by Midnight Star. Great record, but I was unable to rip the instrumental because my turntable needle sucked.

That all changed just the other day when I finally picked up one these puppies. Now I can rip vinyl to my heart's content.

I grabbed the Midnight Star instrumental and thought another song involving touching would go well with it. Then I found an acapella for Kanye West's 2006 hit Touch the Sky and realized it was meant to be.

The System - You Are In My System [VIDEO]

This electro funk duo's song has been stuck in my head since I found the video on 4 Hours of Funk a couple weeks ago. If you were partying at the clubs in 1983, this would be old news, but it was a new discovery for me. Just an awesome dance party song.

Shit is 80s as fuck! I love how the white dude in The System, David Frank, is jamming on an old computer keyboard with a monochrome monitor displaying a waveform. I have no idea if that machine is actually doing anything, but it looks cool/nerdy enough that I don't care. The retro futuristic music technology fits with the lyrics, which I presume are using the metaphor of a computer system to explain a love obsession.

I guess The System are a pretty important electro funk band. They composed the title track on the Coming to America soundtrack for one thing. Singer Mic Murphy went on to write a bunch of hits, like Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle". And they were once covered by fucking Robert Palmer.

Marz - Move It Groove It

Holy shit there are a lot of artists called Marz. These guys must be the best. Stumbled across this awesome funky disco track last night on YouTube.



I'll admit I know very little about Marz, except that this LP is rare enough to be fetching upwards of $75 on Discogs. Of course, that made me want it even more!

I couldn't find this album for sale anywhere in digital form, but luckily I stumbled across a friendly blog that zipped up the whole album and offered it for download. But I'll be honest, this is the best song on the album.
